Q.

What is the difference between pages and leaves?

A.
A leaf is a sheet of paper and a page is typically a side of paper, So a leaf of paper could be two printed pages (2pp) if double-sided or just one printed page (1pp) if single-sided. 
 

Q.

What is Bleed?

A.
Ink that prints beyond the trim edge of the page to ensure it extends to the edge of the page after trimming. As there is a degree of movement when printing on any press, you should always create 3mm bleed on all edges where bleed is needed. Supplying your job without bleed may result in white lines when we trim it.
 

Q.

What is the difference between CMYK and RGB?

A.
CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black - the inks our Indigo digital presses mix together to make colours on your printed job. RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue - the colours of light a computer screen mixes together to make colours on your screen.
 

Q.

What does resolution and DPI mean?

A.
All images should be 300 dpi.  DPI is the amount of ink dots per inch; 300 dots per inch is the required standard for printed material. Anything below 200 dpi may not be good enough resolution for printing.
 

Q.

Can I upload an Office file? For example a Word file.

A.
Of course, you can, however, we recommend that you save your file as a pdf instead. If you create a pdf from an office program it will save your fonts, images, logos etc that you used to create the file. To do this go to 'File', 'Save As' and change the file format to PDF. If we convert your office file at our end we may not have the exact fonts, there may be elements missing or items could move due to different versions of Microsoft Office, for this reason, we will email you a pdf proof for approval. Your job will be placed on hold pending your response to proceed.
 

Q.

How do I supply my artwork? 

A.
You can supply 1 pdf file with all the pages in the correct running order. For 2 versions of a double-sided business card you would supply:
Page 1 = front_version1, Page 2 = back_version1, Page 3 = front_version2, Page 4 = back_version2
Alternatively, you could supply 2 pdf files, one for each version.

What is stapled document printing?

Stapled document printing is a straightforward printing technique which involves binding together pages using staples along the spine of the document. This type of binding is also known in the print industry as saddle-stitched

How many pages can be stapled in a printed document?

A.
The number of pages in a stapled printed document will depend greatly on the thickness of the paper. Here at TradeDigitalPrint.co.uk, we can print and bind together documents containing up to 48 printed pages.

Is a page the same as a sheet of paper when printing a stapled document?

No.  A sheet of paper has 2 sides, each one of these sides is referred to as a page.

Why can my booklet only be printed per 4 pages? 

A.
Your stapled document can only be printed in multiples of 4 pages. When a single A3 sheet is folded in half, it becomes four A4 pages. This is to ensure that no pages fall out of your stapled document. For example, if you choose an A4 size stapled document, that includes 8 pages, from TradeDigitalPrint.co.uk, we will print your artwork on two A3 sheets that are then folded and stapled together to make an 8-page booklet.

Do I need to adhere to certain margins when designing my book?

Yes, ensure you don't place text too close to the edge of the page. As a rule, try to leave at least 5mm of space from the trimmed edge. A common mistake is placing page numbers too close to the edge. If you need help setting your margins you can refer to our templates.

Can I print text across the spread of pages in my stapled document?

If you wish to have your text printed across the spread pages of your stapled document, then we recommend that you do not place your text on the centrefold of the spread as your text could disappear underneath the staples or line up incorrectly if your text is small.

What is Wiro Binding?

A.
Wiro bound booklets are bound together like a notepad, where a wire is inserted and threaded through small punched holes within the margin of the booklet. Wiro bound, also known as spiral-bound due to the long wire coil, are a very popular and cost-effective binding method which allows you to let your booklet lie completely flat on a table making it ideal for cooking books, instruction manuals or presentations when you need your hands free.

What does the wiro binding process involve?

What are perfect bound books?

A.

Perfect bound books are created by glueing the pages to the spine of the book. Perfect bound books get their name from the process that they undergo: the pages and the cover of the book are all cut to be the exact same size and therefore they line up together perfectly.

What is the difference between perfect bound and saddle-stitched?

A.

Perfect bound and saddle-stitched are the two most common methods of booklet binding. Saddle-stitching involves binding multiple pages together along a fold (also known as the spine) with two staples. On the other hand, perfect bound books have a flat spine. The sheets of paper are gathered together and glue is applied to the binding edge, then the cover of the book is placed on the glue.

What is the process for binding perfect bound books?

A.

With perfect binding, all the printed pages are stacked in a block and squared off. Then the pages are glued together along the spine with extremely strong PUR adhesive. The printed cover is then wrapped around and glued on to the spine as well. The remaining three edges are then trimmed so that the edges of the block are perfectly neat.

 

Q.

What glue do you use for your perfect bound books? 

A.

We only use PUR glue to perfect bind our books as it is much stronger than hot melt glue. PUR binding is more tolerant to higher and lower temperatures as is very flexible and non-brittle.

 

Q.

What paper options do you offer with perfect bound books? 

A.

Choose from silk, gloss or uncoated for your cover from 215gsm to 350gsm. Your inner (text) pages can be uncoated, silk or gloss, in weights ranging from 100gsm to 200gsm.

 

Q.

Can any book be perfect bound?

A.

No. The thickness of your inner paper type determines how many pages you can select.  This is because the minimum spine thickness is 2mm. If you choose 100gsm uncoated then 28 pages will be the minimum page count. If you choose 170gsm uncoated then 20 pages will be the minimum page count. If your book contains less pages than the minimum page count then saddle-stitched or wiro-binding would be a more suitable option.

Our perfect bound books are available in A4 portrait, 1/3 A4 portrait, A5 portrait or landscape or 210 x 210mm square.

How do I supply my artwork?

A.

Please supply perfect bound books as two multi-page PDFs consisting of a cover file and inners file. The cover PDF should be supplied as a spread including the spine. The inner PDF should contain only the inner pages in correct running order.

 

Q.

Do I need bleed and crop marks on my artwork?

A.

Yes, this is very important when providing artwork for perfect-bound books. When an image or colour on the page extends past the crop marks, it is regarded as bleed. As there is a degree of movement when printing on any press, you should always create at least 3mm bleed on all edges.

 

Q.

Do I need to adhere to certain margins when designing my perfect bound book?

A.

Yes. The spine area of your book cover is glued to the spine edge created by the block of inner pages. As the cover wraps around these inner pages, up to 9mm of the front and back cover will be glued to the front and back inside pages on the spine side of the book. The cover is creased here to create a hinge that protects the spine glue. With this in mind, we recommend that you use a margin of 12mm minimum from the bound edge of each page as 9mm is used to bind the perfect-bound book.

 

Q.

Do I need to supply fonts?

A.

If you supply us with a Print Ready PDF then fonts are embedded or converted to outlines. However, we may request the fonts if files are supplied in other formats.

Size 37mm, for example, has 70 stickers per sheet but size 88mm has 12 stickers per sheet.

Only the A-sized stickers are available on the marine grade adhesive which is water-resistant, and you must select Waterproof Adhesive as your paper type when ordering.

What are Marine-Grade stickers?

Our Marine Grade Stickers are Matt White (IDP) PE (Teslin®) (Uncoated, filled polyolefin film). A unique material that looks, prints and fabricates like paper but is durable like plastic film. The microporous structure makes the product absorptive yet water-resistant, soft and pliable but strong, highly printable and durable. The porous, uncoated nature of the sheet allows inks and toners to form strong bonds with the substrate. The material is waterproof, durable (chemical and abrasion-resistant), conformable, steam sterilisable and offers a long-life alternative to paper labels. Marine-grade UV acrylic adhesive in conjunction with this face material is approved to BS5609 Part 2 (labelling of chemicals for transport by sea/air). For test tube or tight radius labelling the conformability of the face combined with the strength of the adhesive makes this combination ideal. The adhesive meets the requirements of FDA 21 CFR 175.105 (for indirect food contact), EN71-3 (Toy Safety), CONEG, The Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations 2015 & EU Regulation 94/62/EC (Packaging and Packaging Waste). No heavy metals are used in the manufacturing process and typical contents are less than 1ppm.

Does my card provider use SCA?

Yes. VISA use the term 'Verified by Visa', Mastercard calls theirs 'Identity Check' and American Express is called 'SafeKey 2.0'.  These are all versions of 3DS2 which require 2-factor authentication. This can be in the form of an SMS from your bank, containing a code you need to enter or by you opening your banking app to confirm the payment when asked.
